Welcome to the Mandarins Cricket Club

We are a wandering side that is based around the London area. The name of the club stems from the fact that many of our members are civil servants, who are known as the "Mandarins of Whitehall". The club was founded in 1964 and the words of our President (Lord Butler of Brockwell) to mark our 30th anniversary remain an eloquent description of the essence of the club.

"The secret has been, I think, a sense of humour. All who enjoyed the game in the spirit in which the Mandarins played it have been welcome to play, whether their potential contribution is great or small; and, cricket being what it is, everyone has their moment, when their catch, however fluky, or their deflection through the slips, however unintentional, makes the difference between defeat and victory. There have been many moments to treasure in the memory and, for as long as the Mandarins continue, there will be many more. May that be at least another 30 years."

Robin Butler, 1994

  • [24 January 2010] 2009 averages now available
Barring a few minor tweaks (you can appeal to me for a fee), the 2009 averages are now available. Congratulations to Michael Pattison for managing to sneak the ducks league title with a mere three ducks...
  • [18 January 2010] 2010 nets - dates now confirmed
As usual, there are a number of net sessions available for those who feel themselves in need of a little preparation for the rigours of the new season. The pattern is essentially the same as last year with nets available at The Oval and Lords. Graeme Tunbridge is again coordinating the nets and full details of dates and times can be found on the Nets page.
  • [22 September 2009] A hard fought draw at Brill
The Mandarins cause at Brill was somewhat hampered by a late withdrawl but the 10 Mandarins did well to restrict our hosts to 215 for 8. In reply, the Mandarin middle order displayed its characteristically English frailty and it was ultimately left to the final pairing to battle it out for a draw.
  • [14 September 2009] Mandarins find some late season form
With two fixtures remaining of the 2009 season, the Mandarins have made a late bid for a respectable scorebook by posting a convincing win and a close draw against RCDS and Reading respectively.
  • [2 September 2009] Mandarins get the better of an old adversary
The Mandarins gave a creditable performance to see off Elstead on a fine bank holiday weekend. Elstead fielded a typically youthful and challenging side but, despite some decent pace and tricky spin, our hosts were unable to prevent a well earned Mandarin victory.
