Welcome to the Mandarins Cricket Club

We are a wandering side that is based around the London area. The name of the club stems from the fact that many of our members are civil servants, who are known as the "Mandarins of Whitehall". The club was founded in 1964 and the words of our President (Lord Butler of Brockwell) to mark our 30th anniversary remain an eloquent description of the essence of the club.

"The secret has been, I think, a sense of humour. All who enjoyed the game in the spirit in which the Mandarins played it have been welcome to play, whether their potential contribution is great or small; and, cricket being what it is, everyone has their moment, when their catch, however fluky, or their deflection through the slips, however unintentional, makes the difference between defeat and victory. There have been many moments to treasure in the memory and, for as long as the Mandarins continue, there will be many more. May that be at least another 30 years."

Robin Butler, 1994

  • [3 July 2009] An ode to Dorset...
Clearly the Dorset sun is capable of exerting strong influences on the minds of Mandarins. One may speculate as to the nature of this effect but, such was the success of the Dorset Tour, an allegedly anonymous Mandarin was moved to poetry. I leave you to judge whether you consider the "Dorset Effect" to be an inspiration to lofty genius or closer to a nasty bout of sunstroke...
  • [3 July 2009] A fine Dorset weekend as Mandarins share the spoils
It was evidently not a high scoring Dorset Tour but the Mandarins came away with a win and a loss and, doubtless, a few extra pounds as a consequence of the fine hospitality.
  • [22 June 2009] Mandarins fail to stretch the Pink Elephants
Sunday saw a very welcome return to Vincent Square but, unfortunately, the Mandarins were unable to set our hosts a challenging total. Despite some good efforts with the ball, a target of 96 was always going to be within easy reach and Pink Elephants achieved it in some style to condemn the Mandarins to another loss.
  • [22 June 2009] Mandarins edged out of final over thriller
Once again, a depleted Mandarins side fell tantalisingly short in a fine match against the Charlatans. The Mandarins posted a defendable target of 167 from their 40 overs but the hosts sneaked past in the final over with just two wickets remaining.
  • [12 June 2009] Run-fest at the Rob Foot game
With very close to 600 runs being scored in the day, the Mandarins again came second to the MoD when they posted a highly creditable 292 from their 40 overs in response to a target of 299. By all accounts, a fine time was had by all and it was, once again, a great pleasure to see Mike and Wendy with Michael once again donning the umpire's coat.
