Welcome to the Mandarins Cricket Club

We are a wandering side that is based around the London area. The name of the club stems from the fact that many of our members are civil servants, who are known as the "Mandarins of Whitehall". The club was founded in 1964 and the words of our President (Lord Butler of Brockwell) to mark our 30th anniversary remain an eloquent description of the essence of the club.

"The secret has been, I think, a sense of humour. All who enjoyed the game in the spirit in which the Mandarins played it have been welcome to play, whether their potential contribution is great or small; and, cricket being what it is, everyone has their moment, when their catch, however fluky, or their deflection through the slips, however unintentional, makes the difference between defeat and victory. There have been many moments to treasure in the memory and, for as long as the Mandarins continue, there will be many more. May that be at least another 30 years."

Robin Butler, 1994

  • [1 August 2010] Mandarins complete their tour preparations with another win
Being purists of the game, the Mandarins have always struggled with the limited overs format and are not reknowned for their pursuit of quick runs (if we're honest the combination of the words "quick", "Mandarins" and "pursuit" is an uncommon one in any context). However, continuing the strong run of results in July, the Mandarins managed to achieve just that against long-standing opponents Hetairoi.
  • [27 July 2010] The weather and fortune smile on the Mandarins in early July
July's programme opened with a new fixture at the home of cricket against Broadha'penny Down and this illustrious fixture proved to be a great success as the Mandarins rescued a precarious situation to a record a creditable draw. This was followed by successive wins against Captain Crawford and Cranfield.
  • [1 July 2010] Another enjoyable Dorset tour (in spite of a minor South African distraction)
Eleven Mandarins arrived in Dorset for the hottest weekend of the year with the usual gathering of most of Saturday's team for a light lunch at Shaftesbury's Half Moon pub. This year road conditions had been relatively benign for all but the kit-carrying Stephen Dunmore. The pub gathering was where most of the team received the bad news that Sixpenny Handley 's players had late in the day voted by an overwhelming majority for the illusory belief that Sunday afternoon would afford greater enjoyment if spent watching some other sport on a televi...
  • [18 June 2010] Mandarin resurgence falters against the Charlatans
Fresh from their heroics against Brightwell, the Mandarins pitched up at Woolwich with high hopes of another convincing victory. Alas they, sadly forgot to pitch it up and paid a heavy penalty...
  • [14 June 2010] A Williams century gives the Mandarins a much need victory
David Williams hit 132 not out as the Mandarins powered to victory over Brightwell cum Sotwell.
